GEO vs SEO: what's the difference in 2026?
GEO, or generative engine optimisation, is the work of getting your business cited inside AI answers. SEO is getting found on Google. Here is how they differ, how they overlap, and why you should not pay for GEO as a separate, mysterious product.

What is SEO?
SEO, search engine optimisation, is everything that helps your website rank on Google and get clicked. Keywords, fast pages, helpful content, local signals, reviews and links. The goal has always been simple: show up when someone searches, and earn the click.
What is GEO?
GEO, generative engine optimisation, is getting your business named and cited when someone asks an AI tool like ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google's AI Overviews for a recommendation. Instead of a page of links, the user gets one answer, and you either are in that answer or you are invisible.
So what actually changes?
Less than the hype suggests. Google's own message in 2026 has been blunt: GEO is still SEO. The tactics that win AI citations are the unglamorous ones you should already be doing, clear crawlable facts, short answer blocks, structured data, recency and third-party validation on sites AI trusts. One useful stat: around 90% of ChatGPT citations come from outside Google's top 20 results, so classic ranking alone does not guarantee AI visibility, but the same foundations feed both.
What this means for your business
Do not buy a separate, expensive AEO or GEO product. Extend what you already do. Strong SEO, real PR and structured content get you found on Google and cited by AI at the same time. That is the whole game.
