Local SEO for small business: the beginner's guide
If customers in your area are searching for what you do, local SEO decides whether they find you or a competitor. Here is how it works, in plain English, and where to start.

What local SEO actually is
Local SEO is the work that gets your business shown to people searching nearby. When someone types "plumber near me" or "best barber in Leeds", Google decides which handful of businesses to show first. Local SEO is how you become one of them.
The prize is the Map pack: the group of three businesses Google shows at the top of local searches, with a little map. Those three listings take the majority of the calls. Everyone below fights over the scraps.
The three things Google looks at
Google ranks local businesses on three signals: relevance (do you offer what they searched for), distance (how close you are), and prominence (how well known and trusted you are). You cannot move your business, but you can strongly influence the other two.
Start with your Google Business Profile
Your free Google Business Profile is the single biggest lever in local SEO. Claim it, then fill in every field: correct categories, services, opening hours, photos, and a clear description. Keep your name, address and phone number identical everywhere they appear online.
Then build a habit: post an update and add a photo every week, and ask happy customers for reviews. Reviews are rocket fuel for the Map pack, and they are the first thing a new customer reads.

Book a callMake your website earn its place
A fast, clear website tells Google you are a real, trustworthy business, and gives it the detail to rank you. Have a page for each main service, mention the areas you cover, and make sure the site loads quickly on a phone. Slow, clunky sites lose both rankings and customers.
Build local relevance
Content wins local searches. A page about "boiler repairs in [your town]" will rank for exactly those searches better than a generic homepage ever could. Write honestly for real customers, answer the questions they ask, and Google rewards you for it.
Where to start this week
- Claim and fully complete your Google Business Profile
- Ask your last five happy customers for a review
- Check your name, address and phone number match everywhere
- Make sure your website loads fast on mobile
Do those four things and you will already be ahead of most local competitors. From there, it is about consistency, and tying every bit of it back to one thing: more leads.
